Frequently Asked Questions
We connect you with local rental operators across Madeira. The questions below cover the booking process, voucher use, and what to expect when collecting a vehicle on the island.
How does the booking process work?
You search, compare options from local companies, and reserve online through Rodavia. After payment of the booking advance, you receive a voucher by email. The voucher lists the rental company, vehicle group, collection point, and any conditions. You complete the rental agreement directly with the operator when you collect the vehicle in Madeira.
What is the voucher and when do I receive it?
The voucher is your booking confirmation. It arrives by email within a few hours of completing your reservation. Print it or save it on your phone; you will show it at the rental desk. The voucher includes the supplier name, reservation reference, vehicle category, pick-up location and date, and any included coverage or mileage.
Can I change my reservation dates?
Changes depend on the supplier and rate conditions listed in your voucher. Contact us at [email protected] or call +351 291 774 350 as soon as possible. Some bookings allow free amendments up to a certain number of days before collection; others may carry a fee or require cancellation and rebooking.
What documents do I need when collecting the vehicle?
You need a valid driving licence held for the minimum period stated in your voucher, a credit card in the main driver's name for any authorisation hold, and the booking voucher. If your licence uses non-Latin script, bring an international driving permit. Some suppliers require a passport or national ID as well. Check the voucher for the exact list.
What are the age and licence requirements?
Minimum age is typically 21, minimum licence tenure one year, but this varies by vehicle category and supplier. Drivers under 25 or over 70 sometimes face a young-driver or senior-driver supplement. The voucher states the exact requirements and any additional charges; always check before booking if you have concerns.
How does the fuel policy work?
Most suppliers in Madeira operate full-to-full: you collect the vehicle with a full tank and return it full. Keep the last fuel receipt in case the desk asks for it. Galp and BP stations are common across the island, including near Funchal and Santa Cruz. If you return the vehicle without refilling, the supplier will charge for the missing fuel plus a service fee.
Are there restrictions on where I can drive?
You may drive anywhere on the island of Madeira using paved public roads. Off-road driving and taking the vehicle on ferries to Porto Santo or the Desertas without written permission from the rental company is usually prohibited. Check your rental agreement at the desk; violating these rules can void insurance coverage.
Where can I park in Funchal?
Central Funchal has several multi-storey garages: Monumental Lido near the hotel zone, Anadia in the old town, and Casino Park close to the marina. Street parking uses pay-and-display meters in blue zones; check the signs for time limits. Yellow kerb markings mean no stopping.
How do I reach support during my rental?
For booking questions before or after collection, email [email protected] or call +351 291 774 350 Monday to Sunday, 8:30 to 19:30 WET. For roadside assistance or issues with the vehicle itself, contact the rental supplier directly using the emergency number printed on your rental agreement and key fob.
